While breast-feeding should be encouraged, babies also need early exposure to common allergens.

Egg, wheat and peanuts should be gradually introduced between four to six months to prevent the development of allergies, says Associate Professor John Sinn, a neonatologist and allergist from Royal North Shore Hospital.

Guidelines issued by the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy in March this year reflect this recommendation.
