No, we don’t know what it is either.
Australians who have no idea how much GPs get paid were asked how much GPs get paid, and their answers were surprising.
“We polled over a thousand members of the public,” Professor Candid told The Medical Republic, “to gauge their perception of a GP’s salary and their work-life balance.
“We had a range of answers but most people thought that GPs earn anywhere between a massive amount and an obscene amount.
“We got answers like: ‘My GP spends all day on the golf course so it’s no wonder I can never get to see him’, and, ‘My GP lives in a diamond house and wears gold pants all day long’.
In fact, the general public’s perception of GP earnings was so off-point that Professor Candid’s study explains why a GP’s time, effort and professionalism are no longer respected and why there’s been such a backlash against gap fees.
“My favourite response,” admits Professor Candid, “was, ‘my GP shits gold out of her wealth hole’. I don’t know what a wealth hole is but I sure wish I had one!”
