Constipation is a common problem in babies on formula instead of breast milk.

“Breast-fed babies often do not have constipation because breast milk has the mother’s prebiotics, a fibre that helps grow probiotics,” explains Associate Professor John Sinn, a neonatologist at Royal North Shore Hospital.

Care should be taken in choosing the right type of formula, he says.

“In the old days we used to say that all formulas were the same – they’re not. The more casein-dominant the formula is, the more constipation the infant has.”
