Trent Twomey is the new head of the World Pharmacy Council.

Outspoken head of the Pharmacy Guild, Professor Trent Twomey, has been appointed as the new head of the World Pharmacy Council.

Professor Twomey replaces US-based Douglas Hoey, who has been in the role since 2021.

The World Pharmacy Council was established in 1987 by community pharmacy organisations and is an associate expert group member of business at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Professor Twomey said it was an enormous privilege to be given the new role.

“I am truly honoured that the board has put their trust in me to serve as president and I pledge to do my utmost to build on the legacy of those before me,” he said.

“We all know that these are incredibly challenging times for community pharmacy in all of our communities.

“Geopolitical and financial insecurity combined with falling societal trust in institutions ensure we have a significant challenge. However, I fully believe that we are exceptionally well placed to navigate these threats and turn them into opportunities.

“I look forward to working with our member organisations to elevate the profession and ensure pharmacists are recognised as essential providers of primary care worldwide.”

Mr Hoey, who will serve as vice-president, said Professor Twomey was an outstanding leader and a generational talent.

“I know he will continue to serve WPC and its members superbly,” Mr Hoey said.

“I am just as passionate about community pharmacy and the work of WPC as I have ever been — perhaps even more so with all of the disruption I am seeing domestically and that is occurring internationally.

“Where there is disruption and uncertainty, there is opportunity, and I see lot of opportunities for community pharmacy around the world.

“I am very pleased that the WPC board has elected me as WPC vice-president and that I will be able to continue to serve community pharmacy. It has been my true honour and privilege to serve as president of the WPC.”
