Why Americans can’t afford to get sick

Americans are lucky to live in the world's wealthiest nation. But, there’s one thing Americans can’t afford to do, writes Danny McLoughlin

The United States is the wealthiest nation in the world, and most of its citizens would consider themselves to be lucky to be born there.

As a result, there’s a lot of things most Americans can afford to do. For example, 95% of American households own a car.

But, there’s one thing Americans can’t afford to do. And that’s to get sick.

As you can see from this infographic, the United States spends far more per person for healthcare compared to other nations.

The main reason for that seems to be because everything costs more: A day in the hospital in the US costs 1,200% more than it does in Spain. To have an appendix removed costs 200%+ more than it does in Australia. Delivering a baby costs almost 40% more than in Switzerland. And bypass surgery costs 225% more than it does in the UK.

Go figure.
