Probiotics may have some benefits for pregnant women, including decreasing allergies, gestational diabetes and genital infections, says Associate Professor John Sinn, an infant allergist based in Sydney.

Probiotics haven’t been shown to improve birth weight, neonatal death, miscarriage rate or preterm delivery rate.

In some women the positive effects of probiotics aren’t seen. For instance, pregnant women with a BMI of 30 or 40 did not show improved glycaemic control when taking probiotics in an RCT of 138 people.
