Doctor’s Health NSW has reported productive results that are expected to continue going forward.
As we wrap up an eventful year for the health sector, Doctor’s Health NSW has released its annual Impact Report.
This report focuses on how practitioners and medical students across the state have reached out for confidential doctor support.
Workplace pressures were the top reason prompting health professionals to reach out, with 33% of reported calls related to workplace related stress followed by mental health issues (20%) and medicolegal issues (16%).
GPs made up around 17% of callers, the second-largest cohort after doctors-in-training.
The service has also seen a steady increase in calls since its launch, with this year’s number of calls being just below its all-time high recorded back in 2022-23.
Since last year, the service has seen a 17% increase in calls. This is projected to rise further in 2026.
Doctor’s Health NSW was established on the premise of providing safe, confidential spaces for medical professionals to speak with their peers on the realities of their job without fear of judgement.
The service is primarily provided via an all-hours hotline with experienced doctors on call to assist with management of stress and provide a space to vent whilst feeling supported.
“When doctors have a trusted source of support, they are more likely to seek help early – and stay well enough to care for others,” the Impact Report states.
“Our team understands the realities of medicine because we have lived them.
“We provide practical, empathetic guidance and keep our skills sharp through training, peer review, debriefing, and our national Journal Club, where doctors across Australia share and discuss the latest research and articles on doctors’ health and wellbeing.”
The service was accessed widely by the health sector, with professionals from all ages and stages of career represented in the call statistics.
The report has also highlighted that the service is still maintaining strong financial stability with funds effectively directed to phone line maintenance, expansion of education initiatives and investment in research.
